Can God Trust You Enough To Bless You?

by Maurice Lindsay on January 7, 2013

Can God Trust You Enough To Bless You

Our society today is filled with too many people chasing blessings – instead of chasing after the one who blesses.

Too often, the only time God hears our voice is in a time of need or want. We go months or sometimes even years without speaking to God, but as soon as something tragic happens, He is the first name you call on.

That’s like calling up an old friend whom you haven’t spoken to in 5 years and asking them for a loan to pay your hospital bills. Not only are they not going to give it to you, they are going to think you are crazy too!

But for some odd reason, we seem to think it’s different with God. We think that we can just ask God to bless us, without even playing a part in the blessing itself. And then have the audacity to get mad at God for not answering our prayers.

You can’t play God like that, our heavenly father is not a sucker. Nor is he a magic wand. Yes, he is a miracle worker, but only to those who have a personal relationship with him. To experience favor from God, He has to be able to trust you first.

So today, I am dropping some very important knowledge on you… below are “3 character traits you must have” to prove to God that he can trust you enough to bless you. Enjoy!

The Character of A Champion

Character is one of, if not the most important things you must have if you are seeking to be blessed by God. Reason being, is because character goes beyond being a good person and having morals. Having character shows the type of heart you have and God is looking for people after his own heart…

After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do. -Acts 13:22

You have to understand the reasoning behind why God needs to trust you before he can bless you. See, if  you don’t have the character of a champion you won’t be able to sustain the abundance of wealth that God desires to bless you with. Without the right character, the blessings will only bring out the worst in you.

If you crave power, you will abuse it and lose it. Which means God cant trust you enough to put you in a position of power. If you are greedy, your greed will cause you not to give back to others who are less fortunate, in fact you may even screw people over to get more money. Which means God can’t trust you enough to bless you with finances because you will rob others of their blessings.

If you’re not greedy, but you can’t manage money well and you are always in debt because of bad spending sprees, God still won’t bless you with finances because you will end up worse off then before. Another example, if you are a blabber mouth, always telling other people’s business, and your own friends can’t trust you to keep a secret, then how can God? Therefore he won’t bless you with wisdom because you can’t be trusted with knowledge.

Now you see why character is so important. God has your best interest at heart and he knows what you can and can’t handle so before you go blaming God for all your shortcomings, give your self a character check and see if you are even ready to be blessed.

Wherever you are in life, whether you like it or not, is a result of your character, because your choices explain your circumstances and your character explain your choices. Having the character of a champion requires you to be dependable and always willing to do the right thing, even if it hurts you.

You have to be willing to love beyond all faults and give up your right to hurt someone else for hurting you, cry behind closed doors & fight battles that nobody else even knows about. These are the types of character traits you must have to be blessed by God so he can use you to be a blessing to others. Do you have the character of a champion? Now, on the next most important trait you must have…

A Decisive Mind

If you lack the ability to make decisions and wander through life always playing both side of the fence, you will never get what God has for you. In fact, if you are a neutral minded person, you won’t even make a good friend because you aren’t dependable or trustworthy. You always play on both sides and do not have a decisive mind.

So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.-Revelation 3:16

The #1 trait that God hates in people (more than liars) is luke-warmness. God can’t stand people who are both hot and cold. Which is quite understandable, because how can God trust you if He don’t know whose side you are on.

But this goes far beyond playing both sides and being lukewarm. The issue of not having a decisive mind comes from a lack of commitment, which I believe to be one of the biggest problems in society today. No one commits to anything anymore.  Everyone seems to be satisfied with half-assing their way through life, just taking what they get can get from any and everybody, but never adding any value back into others lives.

Just take a look around. People don’t even take marriage seriously anymore. First sign of anything difficult, one -quick to pull out the divorce papers. What happened to for better or for worse? This is why the divorce rate is at an all time high, there’s no more commitment.

Or how about the parents who leave their children, put them up for adoption, or even worse, have an abortion. Where is the commitment? If you committed to having unprotected sex, then how dare you not commit to being a parent. A child shouldn’t be put off or murdered just because the parent failed to keep their commitment.

These type of folk lack a decisive mind because they are not willing to committ to anything. They play Russian Roulette with life and just roll with the punches, whether good or bad. But life doesn’t have to be that way. God desires for us all to live life in abundance but simple things like not having a decisive mind and not being able to commit is what holds you back.

If you are not able to make a simple decision and commit to that decision, that means you cant be trusted, therefore God can’t bless you. A major part of having a decisive mind involves committing to pay the cost of suffering to receive the blessing. I’ll use the game of football as an illustration.

NFL football, America’s favorite sport, the game we dedicate our entire Sundays to. We love watching our favorite players entertain us with fascinating superhero-like plays, but we don’t know the pain they have to endure behind the scenes. You don’t get too see your favorite players in the locker room after the game, icing their knees, taping their ankles, and wiping the blood off their toes from the blisters they receive during the game. You don’t know that at half-time, as you are watching the beautiful cheerleaders, your favorite player is getting his legs shot up with medicine to take away the pain so that he can finish the game.

That type of suffering takes a commitment far beyond measure. You see, there is always a cost to pay. There is no reward without pain, No progress without struggle. And no blessings without commitment. Do you have a decisive mind? Are you prepared to make a commitment to God? Which brings me to the last (but not least) most important trait you must have…

Radical Faith

Do you believe that God is able? Do you believe that when God can trust you, He will bless you?

Many people claim to have faith in God, but do they really? It’s easy for you to say you have faith in God when everything is going well. But God is saying “show me the people that have faith in Me when everything is going bad and all hell is breaking loose”… that’s how you prove your faith to Him.

I have learned in my own life that if you want to receive anything from God that seems to be far fetched to the eyes on most, it will require a new level of faith – radical faith. When you have radical faith, nothing phases you and nothing can detour you away from believing in God. Yeah, you will go through hard times, and sometimes you feel like giving up, but that radical faith wont allow you to because you know that God won’t put you through more than you can bear.

I have learned to look at every trial as a blessing in disguise because you grow through what you go through. I have yet to go through something that God didn’t see me though. He knows how much you can handle and knows what you need to learn in order to get to the next level, which is the reason for the trails. It’s a test. Just like in school, you have to pass a test to get to the next grade. It’s the same with God, you have to show and prove you are ready to be blessed. And you do that by having radical faith.

Then Jesus answered, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour. -Matthew 15:28

God loves us all, and he truly desires to bless our socks off… but we must do our part by developing the character of a champion, maintaining a decisive mind, and having radical faith to get the blessings that he already has waiting for us.

Maurice: What a powerful post, and I agree wholeheartedly. He does desire a relationship with each and every one of us. God will not be mocked. I see you’ve done a religious post. I saw someone else mention they were beginning one in this new year. It has definitely started me thinking. I will have to have some serious alone time, to see what He wants me to do. Again, great post.

Maurice Lindsay January 7, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Thanks Veronica, yeah I most of the posts is based off of bible based principles just not as in depth as this one. But every now and then I have to write a more in depth “religious” post to get my point across. Thanks for the love though, I’ll check your site out and return the favor!

nik September 27, 2013 at 12:02 pm

Thank u so much for that post… Really speaks to me.
Sometimes we allow things and people to keep us back from our
Blessings. And I know that God wants to bless His children. Like a mother who can’t stand the tears in her childs eyes or bear their hurt. I now know what things I need to work on. I’ve been praying asking God to bless me. I always help others and give my all but I know I need to commit so more to God. Thank you

Maurice Lindsay January 22, 2014 at 1:49 pm

Hey Nik,

Thanks for sharing and I’m so glad you were able to gain some revelation from this article. But don’t think that God is asking you to perfect because he is not. He is just asking you to seek Him first. Not for blessings, not because you want something, but because you love Him.

By putting God first in everything you do, you will naturally develop the traits I mentioned in this article because your heart will be in the right place. And once your heart is sold out to Him, then He can trust you enough to bless you with the things you desire.

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. – Psalms 37:4

God bless ya nik,

Will January 8, 2013 at 1:05 pm

I believe that God is all-loving, all-knowing, all-seeing and truly gracious. He wants to shower his blessings upon us – that is his nature. In truth, we really can’t escape God and we can’t escape his blessings. But what we can do is to be more grateful for the blessings we already have. We can show more gratitude and, make no mistake about it, an ‘attitude of gratitude’ is a fundamental key to unlocking the abundance of blessings he has in store for each of us.

Will :)

Maurice Lindsay January 8, 2013 at 1:14 pm

Thanks for stopping by Will…

And yes, I do agree with you, having an attitude of gratitude is one of the fundamentals of unlocking your blessings from God, which I talk about in other posts. But having an attitude of gratitude also fits right in with this topic, because it shows God you appreciate the small things, therefore he can bless you with bigger things. It all comes back to can he trust us enough to bless us!

Lakecia October 17, 2013 at 12:16 am

I like your post. It has always been interesting to me when people say God needs to know if he can trust you. I believe since God is all knowing he already knows who he can trust. However, he puts us through these series of test so we can see what he already knows about us. I agree with you that the process of this proves to assist in developing our character, renewed mindsets and increasing our faith. The Lord once told me in the very beginning of my journey in having an intimate relationship with him that if I showed myself faithful he would show me how faithful he will be in my life. He has done what he said he will do:)

Maurice Lindsay January 22, 2014 at 1:50 pm

Amen! As the scripture says:

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

JD March 25, 2014 at 2:58 pm

Once again I determined to seek God hourly for a few minutes today afetr “having been away” and found myself in the stream of Grace. You and this post in particular are one of the many ways so far today that a tangible reassertion of commitment to the process of walking in liberation with God has been immediately rewarded. Your football analogy reminded me of the scripture that mentally lazy people (me at times) will never embody. That, “The Kingdom of God has been forcefully advancing and forceful men lay hold of it.” Or women obviously. Its the mental determination to “lay hold of” (like a bull dog) that opens us up to a process of discovery and overcoming; It’s God’s nature to create in us his representation of the Kingdom… as we go along from day to day, hour by hour. Anyway, keep seeking and discovering his totally unique journey for your life. Thanks for not keeping these profound truths and words locked up in yourself. Cheers

Carletta Price January 8, 2013 at 2:06 pm

Very well stated. Easy to understand and digest. Some people think the things of God are complex. Most of it is not. We make it complex through our disobedience which leads to self inflicted trials. Not being judgmental, but much of what we experience in life is the direct result of our decisions and lifestyle. Great article.

Maurice Lindsay January 8, 2013 at 3:03 pm

Thanks Carletta, and you hit the nail on the head… most of our circumstances and what we go through is a direct result of our decisions and lifestyle!

Mary January 8, 2013 at 7:16 pm

Once again Maurice you have hit the ball out of the park.

Maurice Lindsay January 8, 2013 at 7:17 pm

Thanks Mary & Happy New Years!

Magenta April 29, 2013 at 5:31 pm

Thanks for a powerful message! Makes me think I have to stop being a blabbermouth!!! as God won’t trust me with knowledge so He won’t give wisdom! And I have to earn God’s trust! Thanks. It’s going to change how I will live my life :)

Maurice Lindsay April 29, 2013 at 5:46 pm

So glad I could inspire change you! Hearing feedback such as yours keeps me doing what I do. Thanks for stopping by and God bless!

Maggz June 22, 2013 at 1:36 pm

Good day,

I really liked the part about luke warm-that speaks to me. I always believed that there were external forces trapping blessings. Now I understand.
Thank you so much.

Maurice Lindsay June 22, 2013 at 4:33 pm

No, THANK YOU maggz for stopping by and sharing your testimony! Glad you enjoyed the post and were able to get something out of this!

tony okpeh July 20, 2013 at 5:45 am

what a life enriching quote. It reminds me of one of the episodes of the Virgin Mary’s apparition at Fatima. When she was asked by the children to cure some people of their diseases she said in reply, “the Lord doesn’t trust them.” Thanks for giving us the keys with which we can win God’s trust.

LaTanya Quinn July 22, 2013 at 2:06 pm

Hi Maurice, I stumbled upon your website from a post and I enjoyed your article and as a minister through writing I agree. However, I was shocked when I read the curse word you used half-a**ing hmmm. Other than that it was a great read and thanks for sharing.

RJ July 26, 2013 at 1:09 am

I agree with everything you said here. However, I met a lot of Christians who grew up in Christian home, without all the characters you listed above yet it seems that they sail through and get what they want in life without suffering. They do things opposite to what Christianity is all about. They’re selfish, self-centered, deceiving, they defend themselves and get mad when they are corrected. But they seem to get what they want in life and they live okay more than most average people. So if God can bless people without Character, why can’t he bless those with Character? A lot of Christians who have godly Character are living a suffering life, such as no matter how hard they work, their circumstances not changed. But the hypocries and self-centered ones prevail hardships in life. What do you make of it? Is it being lucky and not lucky then? It’s easier to accept that you’re unlucky than knowing that you have done everything right in the sight of God and still not being helped or blessed. Agree? I am talking about those people who have given their entire life serving and living right for God. And they are kinder to strangers than anyone else.
I am speaking for a lot of people who have experienced life that don’t plays their favor, Unfair you may call it. But that’s happening in truth though. So while I agree with the theory that you sow what you reap, but I am not sure if that’s how always works in life. I have seen too many Christians who don’t sow but reap alot. And surely, some have experienced outpouring blessing from God, and they suddenly became a true devoted Christian with character. It just looks like you have to mess up and be so responsible in life in order to get God’s blessing for some. So what does that mean to the rest of people who obey the rules?

Maurice Lindsay July 28, 2013 at 1:40 pm

Thanks for your comments RJ, I always appreciate a different perspective. However, the answer to your topic is very complex, and something I’d like to chat with you about directly. But since we’re in the comments, I’ll give my brief response to your questions…

Yes, I too know many “so-called” christians who SEEM to just sail through life without any hardships or sufferings. But what you have to realize is that all people go through hardships. It may not seem like those people do, but they do. It’s impossible to live on earth without having to go through any trials or tribulations. Their struggles may not be your struggles, but they still have them.

Another thing is most people who claim to be chrsitians are NOT really christians, they only appear to be. They go to church on sundays, quote bible scriptures, but their lifestyle is complete possible to what the bible says. They have hatred in their hearts, they’re selfish, hot-headed, and unforgiving. The bible says you “You’ll recognize christians by their fruit” (matthew 7:16) so these types of people are not REAL christians. So when you see theses types of people getting what you called “BLESSED”, those so called “blessings” are not from God. God doesn’t reward sinners, the Devil does. Just like the millions of un-believers who seem to be living financially free, so do the fake christians. But that’s NOT because of God, that’s because of their own doing.

As for the REAL chrisitans who live holy and try to please of God the best they can, but are often persecuted – the bible tells us plain and clear that “In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” – 2 Timothy 3:12. It also tells us that “Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps” -1 Peter 2:21. And “If you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.” – 1 Peter 2:20. And “Dear friends, do not be surprised if the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when His glory is revealed” – 1 Peter 4:12-13.

So to serve God by following Christ means going through hardships, persecution, trials and tribulations are all mandatory. Just like Jesus, our reward for being good servants is in Heaven, not on this Earth. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t prosper financially while you’re down here, you just have to know and understand the biblical principles to prosperity. The popular scripture “as you sow, so shall you reap” is much deeper than most christians think. The principles of sowing and reaping applies to all areas of our life. I would love to elaborate on it but it would take me all day to explain how to live prosperous in all areas of your life based off what the bible says, so I suggest you read the book called “The Sower of The Seed” by Juli Camerin. It’s a great book and it will give you all the answers you’re looking for. Just google it and you”ll find it. Or check out my review on it here… http://www.mauricelindsay.com/the-sower-of-the-seed-book-review/

Hope this helps,
God Bless!

TheVeryTruth August 12, 2013 at 2:12 pm

well i certainly do feel that he is punishing me by not giving me a good woman to share my life with, and i always wanted to have a family just like so many women and men that were blessed by God to have met one another to have a family. why would he punish me like this, especially for what i am asking for is certainly normal today? i always seem to meet such very nasty women since they are nothing like the real ladies that we had years ago when they were certainly much more educated, and they were very committed to their men as well. women today have certainly changed for the worse which it has a lot to do with it, and it really makes it very difficult for many of us serious men looking for love today. with much more women that are Gay, that will add to the problem as well since many women like to curse at us men when we will try to start a conversation with the one that we would really like to meet. God should not make people born if they weren’t meant to have a love life since we didn’t ask to be born in the first place, and many of us men hate very much being alone to begin with. then again, it is very sad that so many women are very pathetic these days to begin with which does add to the problem as well.

Nick August 18, 2013 at 12:49 pm

TheVery Truth, God is not punishing you for not sending you a woman yet. God knows the desires of your heart but your first and foremost desire must be Him. allow me to speak in love and honesty. Your comment appears negative and negative thoughts attract negative circumstances. Like Maurice said above, if God can’t trust you with something at this time, He’s not going to bless you with it. Would we give a 3yr old a million dollars and tell them to go and invest it wisely? No. We’re not doing it to punish them. We’re simply not doing it because we know they are not ready to handle that level of responsibility at this time.

The same may be true with you. God may feel that you need to draw closer to Him at this time so that your relationship is strengthened with Him before He trusts you with a wife. “Seek ye FIRST the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and ALL of these things will be added unto you.”

TheVeryTruth August 21, 2013 at 1:31 pm

I just want to meet a good woman to share my life with. and thank you very much for your support. Peace.

It’s really interesting to me how you make all of this sound so easy… it’s pretty hard trust and have “RADICAL” faith when your just want to be happy and things are constantly going on in your life….. especially when you’re trying to stay in your own lane and not bother anyone.

Telecia December 4, 2013 at 12:00 pm

Well said! Amen..

Maurice Lindsay December 8, 2013 at 11:48 pm

Thanks Telecia!

Akeeysha williams January 13, 2014 at 7:57 am

You blessed me this morning! I’ve been praying and asking God for a while to heal my body, bless my finances, bless me with a house for my children, bless me with a vehicle, ( my husband just bought the truck thank God) but it’s a lot I’m asking and it seems like he’s not listening. Now I know why? I need to change myself first, I do have faith, I love and put God first, and I pray all day. But I talk to much, I need to shut up and let God work! I truly appreciate this article! God bless you.

Maurice Lindsay January 22, 2014 at 1:42 pm

Lol thanks for sharing Akeeysha, but I don’t want you to get the wrong impression, that you have to become perfect before God can bless you. I’m just saying that you have to be trustworthy in the areas you are asking God to bless you in, before He will. God has our best interest at heart. He knows what we can and cannot handle. And he has to trust us before he can give us the desires of our hearts.

Our ultimate purpose should NOT be to do good and behave well so that we can get blessings from God. Our purpose should be to love and seek God with everything we have, putting him first before any and everything else. He doesn’t want us to seek him for blessings, He wants us to seek him because we love him. And in return for our faithfulness in him, He will bless us!

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. – Psalms 37:4

I wish you & your husband a prosperous Journey.

Tyesha January 14, 2014 at 9:05 am

Well now I know why I’m going through the things I’m going through right now…because of me I guess I’m not and will never be what God wants. He wants everybody to be perfect like Him, well if he wanted that he becer had made me. He started me out as a freaking crack baby and expect me to meet his requirements. No matter how much I try nothing I do is good enough for Him so I’m done, what a waste of my time and life!

Maurice Lindsay January 20, 2014 at 12:49 pm

Hey Tyesha,

I think you misunderstood the point of this article. I wrote this article for specifically for people who treat God like a genie in a bottle, expecting him to grant every wish they make, but only acknowledge God when they need are in a time of crisis. So this article may not be directed at you.

Don’t think that you have to be perfect to please God because you don’t. God loves you unconditionally, as you are right now, not as you should be. Nobody is as they should be. We all have issues and we all fall short of the glory of God. None of us deserve God’s grace and mercy and blessings, yet he gives it to us anyway. He does this because He loves us.

You say that nothing you do is never good enough for God, but that’s not true. God sees you trying. He knows that you are after his heart. But the one thing that you must know is that the only way to please God is to have faith in Him. You can’t please God without faith. Having faith in God not only makes God happy, but it draws you closer to Him. And the more you draw closer to God, the more He can heal your heart, which will free you from the insecurities and forgiveness that you may have in your heart right now about things that happened in the past. You can’t receive blessings from God, until you are ready to receive them. If he blessed you with what you want right now, having so many unresolved issues, it would destroy you. So your job is to draw closer to God , through Christ, so that He can heal your heart and renew your spirit.

Pray the prayer that David prayed to God:

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. – Psalms 51:10 -12

I hope my response has helped you Tyesha. But I am going to keep you in my prayers!

God Bless ya,

Mike February 1, 2014 at 10:02 am

Thanks so much Mo. Your post speaks profoundly to my present situation. I need that renewal of my heart and mind. I have been reckless with God’s abundant blessings.
Psalms 51:10-12 is my prayer right now.

Skye February 12, 2014 at 12:30 am

This is such BULL! People are forever trying to group all people in these ridiculous categories. The fact is, there are people in this world, who have all of that, character, decisive mind, faith, and more and their entire lives are a struggle. And by the way, people can have a bad life based on someone else’s doing; it doesn’t always have to be their fault that they are in that negative situation. As for struggling, what about the people all over the world who’s every day is a struggle-that has all that you mentioned above and leave this earth without ever feeling loved, or happiness or joy or BLESSED. Bull! Pure generalist BULL!

Gladstone March 13, 2014 at 10:55 pm
